Arrest of suspects of ordering murder

The arrest of three suspected perpetrators of the murders of councilor Marielle Franco (PSOL) and her driver Anderson Torres last Sunday (24) had repercussions in media outlets around the world.

The British newspaper The Guardian highlighted that the question “Who ordered Marielle to be killed?” it had been constantly repeated by the left in protests and social media, “but for years, it remained unanswered.”

“The election of left-wing president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022 has breathed new life into the seemingly stalled quest to capture Franco’s assassins,” the newspaper report said.

“Lula promised to fight ‘tirelessly’ to bring masterminds to justice and, in a highly symbolic move, named Franco’s younger sister, Anielle Franco, his minister for racial equality.”

The Argentine Page 12 highlighted that the Brazilian Federal Police arrested the “right-wing deputy” Chiquinho Brandão (ex-União Brasil -RJ), as well as Domingos Brazão, advisor to the State Court of Auditors (TCE) of Rio de Janeiro, and Rivaldo Barbosa, former chief of the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police.

“Six years and ten days after the most resonant political murder of the last decade, perpetrated by members of those ‘militias’ historically linked to Jair Bolsonaro, Federal Police (PF) agents arrested this Sunday the federal deputy of the right-wing group União Brasil, Chiquinho Brazão, the retired councilor, Rivaldo Barbosa, and Domingos Brazão, member of the Rio Court of Auditors.”

The American Washington Post said that the crime occurred a long time ago and, “now, six years later, the police are beginning to respond to what happened.”

“The arrests plunged Brazil into another national reckoning over corruption and impunity, as commentators flooded social media with reactions to the arrests and left-wing politicians applauded the operation.”

THE TV Al Jazeera wrote that Marielle Franco was “a rising star in the PSOL and an outspoken critic of police murders of poor residents of Rio de Janeiro.”

The Qatari broadcaster also said that investigators believe the crime was “a political murder, committed by hired killers.”
