Anyone who goes to Mercadão de São Paulo to buy cod immediately hears the question from the seller: “Do you need olive oil too?”

In the corridors of the tourist spot, customers and traders felt the spike in oil inflation and were playing a real game to see who could get the lowest price.

If at this time of year you can expect to pay around R$200 for a kilo of cod, the astonishment comes when you see that today a small bottle of olive oil costs no less than R$50.

They are imported and of good quality, justify the Mercadão traders, who use sales talk to convince customers to take a combo home.

Since last year, olive oil production has been impacted by the drought that hit olive groves in Spain, the world’s largest producer.

The European country lost half of its production in 2023 compared to the previous year.

In Brazil, the climate crisis also affects the countryside, but here the effect is different: the rains destroyed the plantations.

The expectation of Mercadão sellers interviewed by the report is that sales will be the same as last year.

In part, because of inflated olive oil. Trader Andonios Kambilis says that today he faces a lack of options in the square.

A survey by FGV Ibre revealed that this year’s Easter lunch will be more expensive than the one in 2023.

The main ingredients in the basket that weigh heavily on your pocket are olive oil (+39.82%) and potatoes (+31.96%).

Cod fell 2.27%, as did salmon (-8.93%) and sardines (-5.1%). But tilapia and croaker, two alternatives on Brazilians’ plates, rose 12.39% and 10.97%, respectively.

The hake fillet is the best seller. Few people can afford cod, which costs twice as much as the flagship.
