Medicine prices will rise from April and are expected to be up to 4.5% more expensive. The projection is from Sindusfarma (Pharmaceutical Products Industry Union) and the Brazilian Association of Pharmacy and Drugstore Chains (Abrafarma), based on the annual adjustment rules.

According to current legislation, the adjustment takes place every year at the beginning of April. The percentage is defined by Cmed (Medication Market Regulation Chamber), an Anvisa body, considering accumulated inflation, in addition to other sector indicators.

In 2023, the annual adjustment was 5.6%.

“According to the law, the annual price adjustment defined by the government can be applied this year, from March 31st, on around 10 thousand presentations of medicines available on the Brazilian retail market”, informs Sindusfarma.

The readjustment, however, is not usually automatic or immediate. The sector argues that competition between companies helps regulate prices, as the same active ingredient is sold by several manufacturers and retailers.

“It is important for consumers to search pharmacies and drugstores for the best offers on
medications prescribed by health professionals”, says Nelson Mussolini, executive president of Sindusfarma. “Depending on stock replenishment and the establishments’ commercial strategies, price increases may take months or not even happen.”

Tips for saving

The ideal is to research, compare and anticipate purchases. Check out the tips from the director and founder of CliqueFarma, Angelo Miguel Alves:

  • research prices: compare prices from different local and online pharmacies, which may offer specific discounts for certain medications;
  • buy in quantity: check if there are discounts when purchasing medicines for continuous use in larger quantities;
  • evaluate buying online: shopping online can be more practical and economical;
  • look for generics and alternative brands: before opting for cheaper or generic medications, however, consult your doctor or pharmacist. They can provide guidance on more economical and appropriate treatment options.
  • discounts and loyalty programs: check if the pharmacy offers discount programs.
