This Tuesday, the Israeli Army claimed the death of ‘number two’ of the armed wing of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, Marwan Issa, in an attack it carried out two weeks ago in Gaza.
Marwan Issa, “one of the organizers of the October 7 massacre”, was “eliminated in an attack we carried out two weeks ago”, said Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Daniel Hagari, in a press conference in which he confirmed information released by the White House on March 18.
This leader of the armed wing of the Palestinian Islamist movement was “eliminated in a complex and precise attack by the Air Force, based on intelligence from the Army and Shin Beth”, the Israeli secret services, detailed the rear admiral.
Since the start of the war in Gaza, this is the highest-ranking official in the Palestinian movement killed by the Israeli Army.
A member of the Hamas political office, Izzat al-Rishq, stressed in a statement that he “does not have confidence” in the Israeli announcement about the death of Marwan Issa, without, however, providing proof of the life of this senior leader of the al-Qassam brigades, the armed wing of the Islamist movement.
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan announced the death of Marwan Issa on March 18 at a press conference.
Israel did not confirm, at the time, the death of the Palestinian fighter, born in 1965 and who was an assistant to Mohammed Deif, leader of the Al-Qassam brigades.
The war in the Gaza Strip was triggered by a Hamas attack on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023, which caused around 1,200 deaths and two hundred hostages, according to Israeli authorities.
Since then, Israel has retaliated with an offensive in Gaza that has already caused more than 32,000 deaths, according to the most recent report from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, controlled by Hamas.
The Palestinian Islamist group, which has controlled Gaza since 2007, is classified as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the European Union.
