At least five people died and several were injured in a bus accident on a motorway near the city of Leipzig, in eastern Germany, according to Bild, citing Olaf Hoppe, police spokesman. On board the Flixbus bus traveling from Berlin to Zurich were 53 passengers and two drivers.

In X, the State of Saxony police confirmed the accident that happened after the Flixbus bus veered to the right of the busy A9 motorway, which connects Berlin to Munich, and fell on its side. “Several people died in the serious accident that occurred on the A9 motorway. There are many victims”, declared the police on the social network X.

Police also reported that the road towards Munich was closed.

The bus left Berlin at 8:00, and the accident happened at 9:45.

Speaking to the German newspaper, Flixbus spokesman Sebastian Meyer stated that the company does not know the causes of the accident.

“The exact circumstances of the accident are not yet known. We are, of course, working closely with the local authorities and rescue teams on site and will do everything in our power to quickly and completely clarify the cause of the accident. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this accident and their families.”
