Sporting wants ‘help’ from Benfica to ‘steal’ exclusivity from FC Porto

O Sporting has the chance to become national champion this weekend, in the Clásico against FC Porto, although it will also need Benfica’s ‘help’. In the event of a triumph at the Estádio do Dragão, this Sunday, after a possible defeat for the eagles, this Saturday, against Sporting de Braga, the lions would even end up managing to ‘steal’ an exclusive status from FC Porto when it comes to celebrating the achievement of a League in the stronghold of a rival.

According to the newspaper A Bola, the Dragons have already mathematically guaranteed the title at the stadium of one of their direct competitors on five occasions, three of which happened against Benfica and two against Sporting.

The first occasion took place in 1939/40, when FC Porto won at Benfica’s home by 3-2, in the last round, and the second time only occurred in the 90s. In 1994/95, in the first year of the penta, the blue and whites defeated Sporting in Alvalade, 1-0, followed by another party in the lions’ stronghold, in 1989/99, precisely in the year of the first penta.

In the 21st century, the dragons ended up causing Benfica’s disappointment in Luz in 2010/11, curiously with André Villas-Boas in technical command (1-2), repeating the feat eleven years later, in 2021/22, with a triumph at the drop of the hat (0-1).

If Benfica falters against Sporting de Braga, this Saturday, the possibility opens up for Sporting to party at Dragão, this Sunday, against FC Porto, who would thus end up losing the exclusive right to know what It’s celebrating a title at a rival’s house.
