Ford wants to compete with the entry-level version of the Tesla Model Y in the United Kingdom and has announced a price positioning for the new Explorer below that of its rival. Equally competitive is the Extended Range version, which offers better acceleration and more autonomy.
Good news for potential UK C-segment SUV buyers, as Ford has announced price positioning for the Explorer to be competitive with the entry-level Tesla Model Y.
The Ford Explorer, which shares the same platform with the Volkswagen ID.4, is offered in Her Majesty’s Lands for 46,498 euros, being more affordable than its “cousin” from Wolfsburg and than the Tesla Model Y, leader of the segment in Europe.
The only problem is that the 46,498 euros announced refer to the version with a 52 kWh battery and 171 hp electric motor, as in the entry-level version of the ID.4, and the range is expected to be less than 370 kilometers. Furthermore, this base version of the Explorer will only arrive in the last quarter of this year.
The Tesla Model Y, on the other hand, is available in the United Kingdom for 52,463 euros, but is faster in accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h, taking 6.6 seconds, and offers a greater range of 455 kilometers.
Extended Range Version
However, for a slightly higher price than the Model Y, 53,509 euros, Ford offers the version with extended range of the Explorer, which announces better acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h and a longer range. The same combination of the 77 kWh battery and 286 hp electric motor as the updated ID.4 allows it to reach 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and a range of up to 602 kilometers on a single charge.
The Ford Explorer is also available in an all-wheel drive variant, which is actually the North American brand’s version of the ID.4 GTX, but with a new battery. The two electric motors develop a combined power of 340 hp, making it possible to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. Top speed is the same as the rear-wheel-drive Explorer, 180 km/h.
Prices in Portugal
Regarding Portugal, the entry-level version of the Ford Explorer does not yet have an announced price, with the Extended Range being known for now.
Rear-wheel drive variants are available from 49,067 euros (Explorer) and 52,138 euros (Premium), while all-wheel drive variants are offered from 56,172 euros and 59,242 euros, respectively.

Comparatively, the rear-wheel drive Explorer Extended Range costs almost 4500 euros less in Portugal than in the United Kingdom, but it should also be noted in the case of our country that this is a campaign price. Without it, the price is similar. The advertised delivery time is 24 weeks.
