Average prices for most poultry products are ending March below those recorded in February. According to researchers from the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea-Esalq/USP), the drop reflects weak demand for meat and the consequent low liquidity recorded throughout the month.

According to this Thursday’s bulletin (28/3), the broiler chick market is going against the grain with heated demand that results in an upward movement linked to the industry’s interest in increasing chicken housing, “especially to meet demand external by the Brazilian protein”, points out Cepea. Chicken meat exports are at a strong pace.

In the pig market, technical market adjustments cause prices to react and rise in the second half of March. Even so, Cepea researchers warn that, while in some regions the recent upward movement guarantees an increase in the March average compared to February, in others, the more intense devaluation in the first fortnight results in a drop in the monthly average.

The first weeks of March saw animal availability above demand, which put pressure on live animal and protein values. “In the second part of the month, with supply more “adjusted” in relation to demand, prices rose a little. However, in recent days, buyers have been further away from purchasing new batches of animals”, assesses the Cepea bulletin .

The movement would be linked to the period of Lent, when the demand for fish meat grows to the detriment of red meat.
