The Municipal Council of Gouveia, in the district of Guarda, marks on April 4th the 100th anniversary of the death of journalist, associationist and republican Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva.

In a note sent to the Lusa agency, the municipality revealed that it had prepared a set of initiatives to pay tribute to Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva, on a date that marks 100 years since his death.

The program, scheduled for April 4th, begins at 3:00 pm, at the Cemitério Velho de Gouveia, with the unveiling of a plaque at the grave of Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva.

This will be followed, at 4:00 pm, by the unveiling of another plaque with the name of the person honored in Largo do Castelo and at 5:00 pm an evocative session will take place in the auditorium of the Vergílio Ferreira Municipal Library on the life and work of the journalist, association activist and republican, with an intervention by José Mota.

The tribute to Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva ends with a lecture on “Past, present and future of Mutualist Associations”, by speaker Idália Salvador Serrão.

The Gouveia City Council highlighted that Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva was the owner of the “Balões Venezianos” factory and “a reference of the 20th century for the republican work carried out in the then village, now the city of Gouveia”.

He also recalled that Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva founded the Association of Mutual Aid of Artists and Workers of Gouveia in 1896 and was a partner of Pedro Botto Machado in a silk thread fabric factory.
