Did you know that the World Backup Day exists and that the main barrier for Brazilians to still not correctly store and guarantee the security of their data is not lack of knowledge? This date is celebrated on March 31st and was created by a group of users1 to raise awareness among consumers about the importance of preserving their own documents.

In a survey commissioned by Western Digital2 last year due to the date, we found that 90% of Brazilians made backups, with 26% of them doing it every day. The percentages raised by the survey indicate the use of hybrid solutions, with several backup tools being used at the same time.

In fact, 23% of Brazilians prefer to combine online and physical backup solutions in 2023. So how does an external hard drive (HDD) or solid state drive (SSD) add value to my mobile device, which fits in the palm of my hand? hand?

Cloud backup is a practical option for both companies and end consumers. However, there may be a cost involved in scaling storage and it is not always possible to transfer files from one server to another without paying fees.

In turn, physical backup offers the advantage of saving files in a different location that does not depend on an internet connection, with the advantage of quickly transferring them from one device to another. So, combining the best of each solution is to have an extra guarantee that your files will be protected. What’s more: pen drives, memory cards and portable SSDs or HDDs also have the advantage of being easily transported.

In fact, the concept behind backup is to have one (or several) backup copies of one or more files in the event of loss or inability to access the main device. I like to work with the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of the file, in two different types of storage, one of them in another physical location.

These precautions may seem exaggerated, but they aim to minimize damage in the event of accidents or loss of devices. It is important to remember that two out of three Brazilians were more afraid of losing digital files than physical objects, which can be acquired again.

Additionally, the rise of higher resolution images and videos (such as 8K) and heavier game files should intensify the demand for storage products, as these technologies require greater speed of information transmission. Artificial Intelligence is also growing and requires even higher levels of data storage and processing to be effective.

And that’s why backup will continue to be important in this digital age. The industry continues to evolve, whether because of the volume of data generated by our new consumer habits or the ever-increasing need to help protect our data. We will have more and more devices with greater capacities and faster data transmission speeds to keep up with the increasing need for agility and storage.

So, are you ready to make your backup today?
