The rains that affected the production of garlic and onions in Santa Catarina caused producer prices to reach high levels in recent months. The data are from the Center for Socioeconomics and Agricultural Planning (Epagri/Cepa).

According to the Agricultural Bulletin for the month of April, the average price paid to garlic producers in March 2024 reached R$ 12.21 per kilo for noble garlic types two and three, to R$ 14.91 for types four and five, and R$20.81 for categories six and seven.

Onions reached a price of R$ 3.82 per kilo. The average value received by Santa Catarina producers for the product in March was 15.75% higher than the previous month and almost 97% higher than in March 2023.

This increase in prices occurs due to low supply of products on the market, caused by the influence of rain on production in Santa Catarina, explains the Socioeconomics and Rural Development analyst at Epagri/Cepa, Jurandi Gugel.

As a result, garlic production was 7.26 thousand tons in the last harvest, whereas the estimate announced in August last year was for a harvest of 10.7 thousand tons.

Imports remained within expectations, with 15.87 thousand tons of garlic being imported, which represents an increase of 31.48% compared to the same period of the previous year. The main exporting country was Argentina, which corresponded to 93.56% of the total volume of garlic imported by Santa Catarina.

In the case of onions, there was a significant increase in imports due to the low supply of the product in Santa Catarina. As a result, 76.9 thousand tons of onions were imported in the first quarter of 2024.

The 2023/2024 harvest resulted in the harvest of 402.9 thousand tons of onions in Santa Catarina, which is the largest producer of the food in the country, which represents a decrease of 27% compared to the last harvest.
