Death toll rises to 5 after minibus runs over worshipers in procession in Greater Recife

The fifth death was confirmed by Jaboatão city hall at around 11pm on Sunday. The victim, whose name was not released, was a woman and died in the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) of Lagoa Encantada, in the Cohab neighborhood, in the South Zone of Recife.

Until the last update of this report, the deaths confirmed by the city hall and the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) were:

  • A 75-year-old man, who succumbed to his injuries during treatment;
  • A 51-year-old man, who also died while being treated by rescuers;
  • Three women aged 51, 53 and 66: two of them died before receiving care, and one died in an UPA.

According to the city hall, of the other 27 people rescued, 26 are still hospitalized in the following hospital units:

  • Nine at Hospital da Restauração, in Derby, central area of ​​Recife;
  • Seven at Dom Hélder Hospital, in Cabo de Santo Agostinho, in Greater Recife;
  • One at the Otávio de Freitas Hospital, in Tejipió, in the West Zone of Recife;
  • Six at the Imbiribeira UPA, in the South Zone of the capital of Pernambuco;
  • Two in Upa do Ibura, also in the South Zone of the city;
  • One in an undisclosed private hospital.

The minibus was on line 118 – Marcos Freire/Barra de Jangada, had authorization from the municipality to circulate as complementary transport and was carrying passengers at the time of the accident. The driver, however, fled after the collision, but was identified by the city hall..

The vehicle left the Marcos Freire bus terminal square and was heading towards the Church of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro, in the same neighborhood. The collision occurred on Avenida Barreto de Menezes, in a stretch known as “Adelaide slope”, as it is close to the Adelaide Pessoa Câmara High School Reference School.

To g1, by phone, the secretary of Social Services of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Maria Jacinta da Silva, confirmed that the minibus lacked brakes during the journey.

The Military Fire Department was called at 5:09 pm. Recife Metropolitan Samu was called minutes earlier, at 4:57 pm, and sent 10 ambulances from the cities of Recife, Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Recife, Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Moreno.

Military police also went to the scene to isolate the area of ​​the accident. Teams from the Institute of Criminalistics (IC) and the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) were also called to carry out forensic examinations and collect the bodies, respectively.

g1 contacted the Civil Police to ask about the investigation into this case, but the response was sent by the Pernambuco Social Defense Secretariat (SDS). The state government regretted what happened and reported that:

  • Since becoming aware of the case, it has deployed teams from the Military Fire Department and the Military, Civil and Scientific police to the location;
  • Activated at around 5pm, the Military Fire Department sent eight vehicles to the scene, four ambulances, one rescue vehicle and three operational command vehicles;
  • Firefighter ambulances took three women to different hospital units;
  • Samu doctors found the four deaths at the scene, in addition to other injured people who were taken to hospital units in the Metropolitan Region;
  • The Criminalistics Institute (IC) also went to the scene of the accident;
  • The case is investigated by the Plantão de Prazeres Police Station, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes;
  • Locating the driver is a priority for the Civil Police.

In a note, the city hall of Jaboatão dos Guararapes informed that:

  • The victims of the collision were believers who followed the Cristo Vive walk, carried out by the Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro Church, by Marcos Freire;
  • The Municipal Guard, Civil Defense and the municipality’s Social Assistance Secretariat sent teams to the scene of the accident;
  • “Mayor Mano Medeiros (PL) declared that he was deeply shaken by the incident and ordered the assistance and health teams to carry out a sweep to identify the injured and the victims’ families and provide all the necessary support to these people”;
  • “The city hall is collaborating to ensure that the investigations proceed with due rigor.”

Also in a note, the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife stated that:

  • He received the news of the serious accident with regret and sympathizes with Father Paulo, the community’s parish priest, “as well as with the entire bereaved community in this moment of pain”;
  • “At the time of the accident, Father Paulo offered the sacraments to those involved who were victims and the parish is providing the necessary support to everyone”;
  • Expresses solidarity, placing itself “alongside all the victims involved in this accident, accompanying them with our prayers and our efforts”;
  • It is available “to collaborate with the victims and their families, helping and contributing to overcoming this fatality”;
  • It requires public authorities that “the situation be investigated, with everyone involved in the accident held duly responsible.”
