O head of the Democratic Alliance (AD) list for the European Elections, Sebastião Bugalho, highlighted, in his first speech for the party, that he was a candidate because he believed in “Europe”, without which “Portuguese democracy would not be the same”. The Prime Minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Luís Montenegro, praised the 28-year-old young man, at the same time that he challenged the leaders of the Socialist Party (PS) and Chega to say whether they want to make “a alternative government” and “legislate together”. This Monday, the list of candidates for the European Championships will be delivered to the Constitutional Court, at 3 pm.
In the presentation of the AD candidates to the Europeans on June 9, which took place at Curia, in Aveiro, Sebastião Bugalho confessed that his choice was “a risk” taken by Luís Montenegro, even though he noted that he presented himself for the position for ” European dream”, just like his social-democratic predecessors, including Cavaco Silva, Durão Barroso, Carlos Moedas and Jorge Moreira da Silva.
“I’m here today because I believe in Europe. More than that, I believe in the Europe that Portuguese democracy has helped to build since 1986. I’m here because I also know that Portuguese democracy would not be the same without this European membership”, he said, pointing out that , “in the pursuit of the European dream, we are together”.
Faced with criticism for his young age, the young man recalled that the French Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, is 34 years old, and “is now beginning his journey”.
“When has history not been made of taking risks? When has the world managed to move forward for the better without some boldness? When has anything become better without the slightest bit of courage?”, he asked.
For its part, Montenegro reiterated Bugalho’s choice as head of the AD list due to his “youth, boldness, merit”, and also took the opportunity to leave a hint to the head of the PS list.
“We are being coherent, once again; we did not go looking for a member of the Government that we fired way back when,” he said, in reference to Marta Temido, who resigned from the Executive led by António Costa in August 2022.
In the view of the social-democratic leader, the AD coalition will be the only one “that will not have problems of coherence” in the European campaign, justifying that “the PS will have a lot of difficulty saying why in Portugal it accepts to have a vision of government and share the government with parties that do not trust the European Union and NATO”, he said, referring to the Bloco de Esquerda (BE) and the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP).
But the far-right party Chega will also have to explain itself, as it “walks arm in arm in Europe with French, Italian and German parties that defend the Russian regime of [Vladimir] Putin.”
Montenegro also challenged the leaders of these two groups to decide whether they want to create “an alternative government” and “legislate together”.
“The PS was against our proposal, now it has copied it, adding to it. But it seems that PS and Chega want to approve a reduction in the IRS in parliament different from that of the Government. Now, that is governing, that is replacing the government If the PS and Chega want to govern instead of the Government, then they have to come together seriously, and that’s what they have to tell the country”, he stated, taking into account the approval, last week, of most of the PS’s proposals. , BE and PCP on the IRS, with the Government’s proposal ending up being reduced to the specialty without a vote, like those of Chega and IL, at a time when its approval seemed to be in question.
It should be noted that, in the last European elections, in June 2019, the PSD ran alone and had its worst result ever – less than 22% of the votes – and elected six MEPs.
In addition to AD, which will deliver the list at 3 pm, Liberal Initiative, PAN, PS and Bloco will also submit candidacies for the European Parliament to the Constitutional Court this Monday – in these cases, during the morning.
