Triathlete Luísa Baptista will be discharged from the ICU and is already planning to compete again

This Sunday’s Fantástico (31) showed the surprising rehabilitation of Luisa Baptista, a Brazilian athlete who spent two months in a coma after being run over by a car. The triathlete’s life hung in the balance, but she resisted — and is recovering. “I will come back with all my strength, with all the certainty in the world”he stated.

“I’m privileged to have survived the accident. Fortunately, I survived, I was resurrected, so I’m very grateful,” added Luisa.

“The second news we had [na época do acidente]that she was going to the surgery center, because she was hemorrhaging very intensely, she couldn’t maintain her pressure, which would probably have to amputate her leg”, said Luisa’s mother.

Heart stopped for 8 minutes

The athlete was admitted to the hospital with severe hemorrhagic shock. Her heart stopped for eight minutes. She did not suffer brain damage, but she had fractures on almost the entire right side of her body — some open on her hand and leg.

Furthermore, the lung was punctured through the ribs. Faced with a situation considered almost irreversible. A machine known as ECMO, which works like an artificial lung, helped the triathlete fight for her life.

The 29-year-old Pan-American champion needed the equipment for five days. This was only possible because the case caught the attention of Dr. Ludmilla Hajjar. The cardiologist managed to facilitate difficult access to the device, which is not yet available through the SUS.

“I set up a team, a WhatsApp group, because I had to get material, cannulas, surgical material, the ECMO itself, the people, organize the air ICU. It’s an ensemble, it’s an orchestra”, explained the doctor.

Nayn José Sales, the unlicensed motorcyclist who ran over the athlete, had gone to a party with plenty of alcohol the night before. This week, to Fantástico, he said that he did not drink alcohol, and that the accident occurred when he was on his way to work, but he does not remember the moment of the collision.

“Our lives are at a standstill. While he is free, he is living his life”, lamented Luisa’s mother.

Fantástico had access to the only camera that shows Luisa passing along the highway, 350 meters from the accident site. The video does not record the motorcycle, which, according to the victim’s defense, reinforces the thesis that the motorcyclist was coming in the opposite direction, invaded the other lane, and hit the athlete on the wrong side of the road. The expert reports have not yet been completed.

According to the delegate responsible for the case, the motorcyclist is responsible for bodily injury while driving a motor vehicle. “The classification that is being investigated now is changing to attempted murder due to possible intent,” said the delegate.
