In 2023 there were a total of 393,598 temporary job placements, compared to the 416,419 annual hires registered in 2022. In December 2023, 3,792 people were hired on a temporary work basis, which corresponds to a decrease of 11.9% compared to the same month of the previous year.

Since 2022, the temporary work index has been stabilizing, however it showed a gradual decrease since the beginning of the year, standing at 0.88 in December, a value lower than that recorded in the same period of the previous year.

The areas that hire the most in temporary work continue to be companies manufacturing components and accessories for motor vehicles, as well as companies providing meals for events and other meal service activities.

Between 26% and 27% of those placed have an average age above 40 years old, and basic education continues to be the dominant level of education.

Afonso Carvalho, president of the Portuguese Association of Companies in the Private Sector for Employment and Human Resources, states that “the overall evolution of the number of hires in 2023 is less positive compared to last year. This is justified by the fact that in 2022 we saw a strong recovery in the number of placements, above all because company activities returned to normal after the pandemic. However, if we compare the previous year’s values with those obtained in 2021 and 2020, it is possible to see that the number of placements is recovering”.
