NIn a statement, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Andrew Mitchell said he had delivered an “unequivocal condemnation of the Government’s horrific murder of seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid workers, including three British citizens”.

“I requested a rapid and transparent investigation, which is shared with the international community, and full accountability,” he added.

Mitchell also stated that he reiterated the pressure for Israel to create “an effective de-escalation mechanism, in order to expand humanitarian access”.

“We need to see an immediate humanitarian pause, so that aid arrives and the hostages leave, and then move towards a sustainable ceasefire”, he stressed.

Labor Party leader Keir Starmer also issued a statement condemning the attack and calling for an investigation and punishment of those responsible.

“Aid workers put their lives in danger to serve others. Their deaths are revolting and unacceptable – and this is not the first time that aid workers have come under fire in Israel’s offensive,” he lamented.

The UK opposition leader went further and called for an “immediate ceasefire, the immediate release of all hostages and full humanitarian access to Gaza.”

The humanitarian organization WCK revealed today that one of its vehicles was attacked on Monday night by the Israeli army as it passed through Deir al Balah, in the center of the Gaza Strip, after leaving a warehouse where they had unloaded 100 tons of food, in a movement coordinated with the Israeli authorities.

In addition to the British, the group of victims included citizens of Australia, Poland, Palestine and a worker with dual North American and Canadian nationality.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admitted today that the Israeli armed forces were responsible for the attack.

“Unfortunately, on the last day there was a tragic case in which our forces unintentionally targeted innocent people in the Gaza Strip,” he said, adding that the incident will be the subject of an exhaustive investigation, but that such things “happen in war.”

The attack on humanitarian workers has already been condemned by the European Union and several other countries.

Since the start of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, on October 7, 2023, World Central Kitchen has participated in relief and humanitarian assistance efforts in the Gaza Strip, providing meals to the enclave’s residents.
