The death of the president of the French republic occupied most of the front page of the DN. “The West loses one of its greatest ‘leaders’: President Pompidou has died”, headlined the newspaper. And he continued: “Despite the severity of the illness that had struck him, the news caused surprise and consternation throughout the world.”

From the Élysée came the information that “the French president knew perfectly well that the end was close”. On this day, the official cause of President Georges Pompidou’s death was still unknown and France had one month to elect a new president of the republic. The news of his death, despite everything, was not that surprising. Remember that Georges Pompidou had already missed some commitments in March.

The floods in Brazil continued to be in the news, due to their severity and consequences. “In the south of Brazil: Poisonous snakes and rabid dogs flee like people from flooded lands”, could be read in the bottom left corner of the newspaper. “Poisonous snakes and packs of rabid dogs joined the human exodus today, in order to escape the worst floods in the history of Brazil”, it read. “The vipers and dogs gave a new dimension of horror to tens of thousands of flood survivors. The floods left more than 300,000 people homeless in ten states.”

If bad news came from Latin America, not everything was going well in Europe either. “Disagreement in Brussels: France blocked a possible conciliation of the nine with the Americans”.

An editorial, which continued on the second page of the newspaper, referred to: “Brazil and the Portuguese Ultramar”, in a dissertation between the former and, at the time, current Portuguese colonies.

On the same day, by decision of the Minister of Industry and Energy, Daniel Barbosa, he decreed “Free fuel supply on Saturday and Easter Sunday”.
The price of oil, 50 years ago, was a very serious problem and its price was fixed periodically.

On this day, in the bottom right corner of the DN, a news item stated: “Like oil: Chile thinks that the price of copper should be fixed by producing nations”, given that this metal also had considerable price fluctuations in the markets.
