The research shows that around 80% of the cases were related to defenders who worked to defend rights linked to land, territory and the environment and a fifth of the threats affected communities, such as communities.

But the end of the Bolsonaro government did not guarantee the dismantling of the attacks. Data from the Pastoral Land Commission indicate 973 cases of conflicts in the countryside in the first half of 2023 — an increase of 8% compared to the same period in 2022.

The numbers make the period the second most violent in the last ten years, behind only the first six months of 2020, when the CPT recorded 1,007 conflicts.

During the mission to Brazil, the special rapporteur will meet with government representatives, human rights defenders, civil society representatives, as well as representatives of indigenous peoples, trade unionists and journalists.

Before the visit, a consultation allowed entities to submit reports and details of the national situation. One of the organizations that participated is Justiça Global, which also denounced violence in southern Bahia against indigenous people and activists.

This year, the execution of Maria de Fátima Muniz, Nega Pataxó, in Aldeia Ourinho, in Pau Brasil (BA), was reported to international organizations.
