The arrival of several artificial intelligence tools on the Galaxy S24 could indicate that Samsung is ceasing to invest in the Bixby voice assistant, but it seems that the Korean brand’s plans are not exactly these.

Speaking to CNBC, Won-Joon Choi (R&D director at Samsung Mobile) said that the company is “working hard” to reinforce Bixby with AI features. This seems to clash with the way the brand promoted the Galaxy S24, with a strong focus on AI capabilities, but almost never mentioning the voice assistant.

In fact, the Galaxy S24 ends up being based on Google’s artificial intelligence capabilities, specifically the Gemini Nano – there are several tools similar to those of the most recent Pixel, launched in 2023. With this confirmation from Won-Joon Choi, you can there is a dilemma on the horizon for the Korean brand.

On the one hand, Samsung has this “partnership” with Google to use Gemini’s features; on the other, it has a voice assistant that can (and will) receive AI capabilities, which makes Gemini a direct competitor. This decision may also have to do with the fact that Apple is in negotiations with Google to bring Gemini to iOS.

“I believe we need to redefine the role of Bixby, so that it can be equipped with generative AI. You need to be smarter and able to converse more naturally,” added Won-Joon Choi. Remember that, recently, Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy S24’s AI features have been extended to more smartphones, with version 6.1 of One UI.
