Yuki Tsunoda has revealed that braking and low-speed cornering are the two areas where he has an advantage over RB teammate Daniel Ricciardo. The Japanese driver has surpassed the Australian so far, conquering the position of leader of the Red Bull Racing B team in the first three stages of the 2024 Formula 1 season.

“I would say that so far, based on what I’ve experienced over the last three years, I probably know how to make this kind of car fast,” Tsunoda said. “Actually, most of the time I struggle a lot in FP1 and FP2, more than Daniel. In fact, he drives very well. At the same time, we both managed to turn things around between FP2 and FP3, that’s how we can improve. Obviously his style has also changed a bit from last year, so it’s still not easy for me.”

Despite praising Ricciardo, Tsunoda highlighted his confidence in braking as his differentiator. “I would say my strong point is braking. Even against previous drivers, I have a lot of confidence, few drivers can brake like me. So braking is my strength and I think we can maximize performance with that.”

The Japanese driver also sees the arrival of Alan Permane, former Alpine sporting director, as a positive addition to RB: “I think the team has changed a lot, but one thing that hasn’t changed much is the driver, at least me. I want to be someone the team can trust, especially I want to be a stable guy to help them move in the same direction, or on the development side, help them think in the right way. Based on my experience over the last three years with the team”, added the Japanese driver.
