An employee was shot dead and decapitated on the premises of Hospital Instituto Doutor José Frota (IJF), in Fortaleza, this Tuesday morning (23). The incident occurred in the hospital cafeteria, where the body of the food service employee was found. During the attack, another person was also injured. The perpetrator fled the scene, but was captured by police on Tuesday afternoon.
Samuel Elânio, Secretary of Public Security of Ceará, reported that the motivation for the crime appears to be jealousy. The suspect, whose partner works at the hospital, “had been showing behavior typical of a jealous person and there were signs that he could commit a violent act,” according to Elânio.
Photos shared on social media show the victim in uniform on the cafeteria floor, with her head separated from her body and a knife visible next to her.
The suspect, who is a former IJF employee and was fired more than a year ago, managed to enter the hospital using the facial recognition system, which had not yet been deactivated.
The IJF is one of the main hospitals in Fortaleza, known for being a reference center for the treatment of complex traumas, serious vascular injuries and burns, and is administered by the city hall.
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing multiple gunshots, followed by a rush at the hospital. In addition to the murdered employee, another victim was shot and required emergency surgery. After the crime, the perpetrator fled, but was located and arrested by the police in the city of Aquiraz, close to Fortaleza.
“The families of the victims are being welcomed and the situation is being monitored by security agencies, which are receiving full support for the investigations. We emphasize that all patient care continues to be carried out without interruption”, said the IJF Management.
Mayor José Sarto regretted the case.
“It is unacceptable for violence in Fortaleza to continue as it is. Today we are once again experiencing moments of horror. Two brutal murders. The State Government’s paralysis in combating factions does not appear to be just incompetence, but also complicity. I contacted the Secretariats of Citizen Security, Education, Health and Human Rights to provide full support to the families of the victims and our workers, to whom I dedicate all my solidarity. I will not allow access to our public services to be hampered by insecurity”, said Sarto.
“Investigate the case, because we effectively do not have complete information. There is information that an employee was killed and may have been killed by another employee and it happened inside the cafeteria, the information that reaches me so far, in the hospital cafeteria. We don’t do public security inside the equipment, we do it outside the equipment. Obviously, the hospital has a surveillance team, there is a Municipal Guard. What is imagined is that in these environments the Municipal Guard and the surveillance force hired by the city hall protect public safety within its hospital. That’s not what unfortunately happened, a person lost their life, but our task now is to investigate, identify the person who caused it and arrest them. “, said Governor Elmano de Freitas.
