The Civil Police of Ceará are investigating the murder of an employee at the Hospital Instituto Doutor José Frota (IJF), in Fortaleza. The crime was motivated by jealousy between the criminal and the victim, according to the Public Security Secretariat. On Tuesday morning (23), a man entered the unit, fired several gunshots at the server and, finally, decapitated him. Videos obtained by MeioNews show the desperation and rush of the people who were there.
ACCESS TO THE HOSPITAL: Secretary Samuel Elânio informed that the individual is a former hospital employee and used facial recognition to enter – even though he was fired more than a year ago. He had a firearm in his backpack and upon seeing the victim, he fired approximately four shots. Later, according to witnesses, he took a knife from the nutrition room and decapitated the employee. Another employee was shot and taken to the operating room.
Several shots were heard and there was a rush inside the unit. According to the Secretary of Security, the crime suspect entered the hospital to kill the employee because he was jealous of his wife with him. Furthermore, he would have threatened the victim on other occasions because he was suspicious of a possible romantic relationship.
“The author was jealous of his partner who works at the hospital. He also worked at the hospital until 2022 […] One of the employees, who was the victim, would be insinuating himself towards the partner of the perpetrator, which is why he had already announced a few times that he was going to carry out an act of this type”, explained Samuel Elânio.
POLITICAL CONFLICT: The city manager of Fortaleza lamented the case and criticized the Ceará government’s performance in public security. “It is unacceptable for violence in Fortaleza to continue the way it is. Today once again we are experiencing moments of horror. Two brutal murders. The State Government’s paralysis in the fight against factions does not seem to be just incompetence, but also complicity […] I will not allow access to our public services to be hampered by insecurity”declared Mayor José Sarto.
On the other hand, the governor of Ceará, Elmano de Freitas, also spoke out about the case and criticized the mayor of Fortaleza, José Sarto. “Our security forces are searching and will very soon arrest the criminal, already identified, who committed a barbaric crime […] We must also regret the irresponsible and opportunistic stance of the mayor of Fortaleza, who, seeking to create a political fact on top of a tragedy, attributes the episode to the action of factions. And he still speaks, lightly, of the State’s complicity. Out of respect for the people of Ceará, I will not participate in this game of belittling the mayor, who is not concerned with solving the problems, but only thinking about his re-election. The population of Fortaleza is already judging him for this. On the contrary, I will use all my energy to face the problem of violence, together with our security forces, which I trust. I will never outsource responsibilities, as the mayor of Fortaleza cowardly does, exceeding the limits of ethics”, wrote Elmano.
