“My parents seemed to live in another galaxy”: the 25th of April passed through families like a comet, driving adults crazy and confusing children

-

A transition was abrupt. There was a time before and after, between those days of April 1974 until the end of the PREC, in November 1975, when the familiar models of a city bourgeoisie aligned to the left and right went into upheaval. The parents, busy living or fleeing the Revolution, seemed to have been struck by an urgent disorder, absenting themselves from home and moving into public spaces, leaving the youngest children to themselves, their grandparents, their siblings. In the months when democracy was taking its first steps, at the same time that many were going through their rite of passage between childhood and early adolescence, life was experienced with an intense and confusing freedom. It is from the stories of Carmo Ribeiro Ferreira, Ângela Luzia and Miguel and Francisco Pereira Bastos, where emotions and family experiences are revealed, that we draw a portrait of this period that marked a generation that did not yet have a voice.
