“Ohe challenges facing the new national security team are unprecedented,” said Lai, at a press conference in Taipei, where he announced the next ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense, as well as the heads of the National Security Council and the Cabinet of National Security, among other senior officials.
The current secretary-general of the Presidency and former mayor of the city of Taichung, Lin Chia-lung, will be the new minister of Foreign Affairs, replacing Joseph Wu, who will now head the National Security Council.
Wellington Koo, a lawyer by training, will replace Chiu Kuo-cheng, a retired general, as Defense Minister.
The head of the National Security Bureau, Tsai Ming-yen, will remain in his current post, while the Mainland Affairs Council — the government agency responsible for relations with China — will be headed by Chiu Chui-cheng, its spokesperson between 2016 and 2023.
In Lai’s opinion, these figures have three fundamental characteristics: they are “professional” and “experienced” politicians, they have the ability to cooperate with each other and they consider Taiwan as “their own responsibility”.
“In the face of the rise of totalitarianism and China’s constant advance, the national security team must take responsibility for the country and protect it,” said Lai, who pledged to lead the new government “using peace as a beacon and democracy like a compass.”
William Lai – considered a “secessionist” in the eyes of Beijing – and the remaining members of the Government will take office on May 20, four months and a week after the last presidential elections, in which Lai won with 40% of the votes.
