The prices of live pigs and meat have fallen in recent days, according to surveys by the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea) at Esalq/USP. For the animal, Cepea researchers explain that the pressure comes from weakened internal demand and high supply.

In wholesale terms, the downward movement was observed for the majority of products monitored by Cepea and is due to the supply coming from the southern region of Brazil (largest producing hub) at competitive prices.

This scenario, according to Cepea researchers, forces meatpackers in São Paulo to negatively adjust the negotiated price, in search of greater liquidity and to avoid an increase in inventories.

Among the producing states, the biggest drop was recorded in Paraná. Yesterday (4/24), the Cepea/Esalq indicator for live pigs showed an average price of R$5.71 per kilo, a drop of 9.37% since the beginning of April.

At the wholesale level in Greater São Paulo, special pork carcasses were priced at R$ 9.30 per kilo, a drop of 2.21% in the month.

Given the drop in prices paid for live goods in the independent market in April, the purchasing power of São Paulo pig farmers fell compared to soybean meal.

However, it grew in relation to corn, since the cereal registered a more intense devaluation than that seen for the animal.
