Gas station numbers are not under the control of the driver; but there are other factors that we can control.

The scenario of fuel prices in Portugal (and in other countries) it is not encouraging.

Current times are very turbulent and, throughout this year, we have seen constant rises and few declines; with a peak reached in April.

Prices at gas stations are not under the control of those who drive; but there are other factors that we can control.

carVertical, in a statement sent to ZAP, shared/reinforced a list of habits and simple solutions that can help reduce drastically the spending in fuel.

Drive slowly
It’s one of the most obvious and well-known connections: the faster you drive, the more aggressive you are (with strong acceleration and sudden braking), the more fuel you use. There may be differences of 40%. The changes must be used to brake, for example. Lowering the speed is a good idea – it also helps preserve the engine, tires and suspension; Furthermore, how much time does being aggressive when driving save on a normal trip? 1 minute?

Less air conditioning
It doesn’t go into the pedal, but it goes into consumption. The air conditioning is often working even when it is not necessary, when the driver does not even notice. It can increase fuel consumption by 30%.

Tire pressure
Tire pressure is not the same for everyone. It’s always better to look at the brand’s own recommendation. Optimal pressure improves performance, comfort, safety, and fuel efficiency. Underinflated tires present more rolling resistance, causing the engine to consume more fuel to maintain speed.

Less weight
Do you have a full suitcase? It’s needed? The car is not a warehouse, a pantry. Furthermore, there are those who dispense with spare wheels and exchange steel for aluminum or plastic. The heavier the car is, the more fuel it uses.

Avoid traffic jams
Maybe it’s already your habit, but avoiding traffic queues also helps save fuel, in general. Even if the route is longer, if done without stopping, it usually saves fuel.

Less travel
Try to accomplish several tasks in one trip. It’s better than making multiple trips throughout the day. Engines use more fuel when they are not warmed up. The engine has to heat up (just like the human body) – therefore, excessive effort without heating ends up damaging several parts.

Car choice
If you can afford it, choose a fuel-efficient car. Avoid heavy SUVs and executive sedans. For those who drive mainly in the city, any car that can transport people and luggage may be sufficient.

Car care
Every day. The last suggestion fits into any of the previous ones: take care of your car. The condition of the vehicle is essential for fuel efficiency. A faulty oxygen sensor, for example, can double fuel consumption. Engine, suspension, electrical systems… Everything has an impact on fuel consumption.
