Prices even slowed down last year, but continued on an upward trend. Lisbon is the most expensive area in the country, where the square meter already costs, on average, more than 4,000 euros, where the value per square meter is already more than 4,100 euros.

In the month when we talk about freedom, the housing crisis continues to echo the dilemmas of a generation, which finds itself deprived of one of its most fundamental rights.

In 2023, this crisis had a greater impact on income and credit. On the streets, the march took place from north to south of the country in protest for solutions for the sector.

Now, data from the National Statistics Institute show that housing prices slowed last year, but continued on an upward trend.
House prices increased by more than 10% in 130 municipalities.

The municipality of Lisbon continues to be the most expensive in the country. The average value per square meter is already over 4,100 euros.

Among the most expensive areas to live in the country, the Algarve is also highlighted. Six of the ten municipalities in the Algarve have some of the highest values on the market.

The biggest price rise in 2023 took place in the Douro region. In the municipality of Armamar, in Viseu, the price per square meter increased by 97%.
It is now 400 euros, still well below the national average.

There are also descents

But there were not just increases. In 81 municipalities, prices fell last year. Declines that occurred, above all, in the northern interior of the country and in municipalities with little population.

Luís Montenegro’s government established the housing crisis as one of the legislature’s priorities. He has already proposed five main strategies:
increase the supply of housing; stabilize the rental market; support vulnerable tenants; assist young people in purchasing their first home; and revoke the measures it considers inappropriate from the socialist government’s “More Housing” program.
