Residents of Fernando de Noronha can take a free cardiovascular emergency course. The Viva Coração project will be carried out from May 20th to 23rd and information will be passed on about cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of external and automatic defibrillators, in addition to airway clearance maneuvers.

The course has 90 places, in three shifts, for professionals from different areas, including the tourism sector.

Free registration for those interested in participating in the Viva Coração project can be made from Monday (29th) to Wednesday (1st), at Hospital São Lucas, from 8am to 5pm, in Fernando de Noronha.

The latest edition of the project was held in December 2023, aimed at healthcare professionals. This time, the organizers want to count on the participation of lifeguards, visitor drivers, divers, military and civil police, the Fire Department, teachers, community health workers and residents in general.

In the course, students will learn how to act in rescue with chest compression training, among other techniques.

The project has been taking place on the island since 2007, when Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) were installed in tourist attractions in Fernando de Noronha. According to the local government, there are currently 12 pieces of equipment in operation, with hemorrhage control kits.

The Urgency and Emergency manager of Fernando de Noronha, Danielle Gomes, said that the training is necessary because a person’s chance of survival drops by ten percent for every minute that cardiopulmonary resuscitation is not performed.

Danielle also said that the lives of victims of cardiac arrest and choking can be saved with immediate care, cardiovascular resuscitation maneuvers and unblocking the roads.

She stated that more than 94% of cases of choking asphyxia occur in children under the age of seven.

The training will be carried out in the auditorium of the Dois Irmãos Family Health Unit, with equipment used in emergencies, simulating real care.

The project is carried out by the team from the Cardiovascular Emergency Training Laboratory at Hospital Agamenon Magalhães, in Recife, with an international protocol in urgent care and cardiovascular emergencies.
