The return of socialite Regina Gonçalves, 88 years old, to her apartment in the Chopin Building, in Copacabana, this Friday, exposed the elderly woman’s lack of other assets, in addition to jewelry that would have been removed from the property’s safes. Regina’s family claims that the goods were removed by José Marcos Chaves Ribeiro, the socialite’s former chauffeur who presented the court with a deed of stable union with the elderly woman — she stated, upon returning to the apartment, that the driver is not her husband.

Regina’s nephew, Álvaro O’hara says that there are sculptures and a painting that are no longer in the house and that his aunt also found missing Persian rugs, decorative silver pieces and gold cutlery:

— We couldn’t see the floor, it was all a mosaic with carpets that each cost up to R$500,000.

The family says they don’t know what the situation is like at another property in Regina, in São Conrado, also in the South Zone. According to Álvaro, two moving trucks left the house last week, which Ribeiro was still visiting.

— All her properties are full of works of art. At the house in São Conrado, friends of ours told us not to go there, because there are strange people who go there and people have even been shot at the house.

This Friday afternoon, judge Antônio Carlos Nascimento Amado, from the 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Rio Court of Justice (TJRJ), determined that his decision of February 27, which maintains the protective measure against Ribeiro, that is, the dismissal of her husband, 250 meters from Regina, remains in force. The judge also informed that the fellow judge of the 6th Chamber of Public Law, of the same instance, who decided otherwise, thus raising a conflict of decisions, be informed about the fact.

Ribeiro’s lawyer filed an appeal on Friday afternoon, requesting that judge Antônio Carlos Nascimento Amado, from the 3rd Criminal Chamber of the TJRJ, recognize the decision of the 6th Chamber of Private Law of the TJRJ. In the document, the defense highlights that an expert report prepared by psychiatrist Felipe de Oliveira Souto, a judicial expert, on Regina’s mental health.

On Thursday, the Court granted two opposing decisions regarding the guardianship of socialite Regina Gonçalves. Judge Valéria Dacheux, from the 6th Chamber of Private Law, maintained Regina’s provisional guardianship with her husband, José Marcos Chaves Ribeiro, revoking the protective measure requiring him to stay 250 meters away from his wife. In the first instance, substitute judge Claudia Leonor Jourdan Gomes Bobsin, from the 1st Court of Children, Youth and the Elderly, ordered the socialite to return to the Chopin building with the curator, in this case, her nephew. The second instance decision prevailed: Regina would have to return with her partner.

The struggle between Regina’s family and her partner has existed since 2016, but it was only this year that the legal battle between the two parties intensified. On January 2, Ribeiro claimed that Regina had an outburst and went to her brother’s house in Copacabana, from where she never returned. A lawsuit was filed by the socialite’s family against her husband for psychological and domestic violence suffered by her, in addition to the threat. The case only came to light last week, when Regina’s neighbors, residents of the luxurious Chopin, where the socialite has two apartments, launched a movement on social media, reporting her disappearance.

Decision in favor of the partner

Judge Valéria Dacheux’s decision was granted at 10:40 am. Although the system is electronic, until Thursday night, the information was not included in the movements of the 1st Court of Children, Youth and the Elderly, displayed on the Court of Justice’s website. The next step now will be for the first-degree judge to modify her decision due to the outcome of the appeal in favor of Ribeiro. The first-degree judge reiterated that, “given the repercussions” of the case, the process remains confidential.
