“The main enemy of the dollar is the United States”, says Paulo Nogueira Batista Jr

247 – Advisors to former US President Donald Trump are considering imposing sanctions against countries that reduce the use of the US dollar in their commercial transactions. According to Bloomberg sources, Trump’s team is developing a strategy to encourage BRICS countries to continue using the US dollar in international trade, if Trump is elected in the next elections.

During an interview with the Brasil Agora program, economist Paulo Nogueira Batista Jr addressed the issue of de-dollarization and the influence of the United States in this scenario. He highlighted that “Americans are very afraid of de-dollarization” and pointed out that “Keynes’ proposal at Bretton Woods was an international currency”, however, “Americans have always been opposed to that”.

Nogueira also emphasized that “they want to keep the dollar as the international currency”, but noted that “they are liquidating the reliability of the dollar when they apply sanctions”. For him, “the dollar’s main enemy is the United States.” He argued that “with standard currency, the United States finds no limits to financing its fiscal and external deficits”, highlighting that “they know that currency is power and that power is currency”.

Given this context, Nogueira pointed out that “it will be a challenge for countries like Brazil to defend their sovereignty.” The interview takes place amid a debate about the influence of the dollar on international trade and the efforts of different countries, including those from the BRICS, to diversify their reserves and reduce dependence on the American currency.
