Hawaiian papaya prices fell last week in the main producing regions. According to a survey carried out by the Hortifrúti team from the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea), papaya types 15 to 18 were sold at an average of R$ 7.00 per kilo in the North of Espírito Santo and the South of Bahia , representing drops of 19% and 21%, respectively, compared to the previous period.
According to Cepea, in addition to the reduction in demand from buyers, there was a slight increase in supply, which contributed to the recent drops in prices, as Cepea researchers pointed out. Some producers, aiming to take advantage of high price levels, are placing green fruits on the market. However, Hortifrúti/Cepea experts warn that this practice could create a bottleneck in trade, as these fruits are not as well accepted by consumers and can put additional pressure on prices.
