MAhmoud Mehrabi was convicted of publishing information about the “manufacture of artisanal weapons”, “inciting war and murder and insulting sacred entities”, the Iranian news agency Mizan reported today.

The accusation also encompasses a series of infractions against public security and “Islamic morals”.

According to the Mizan agency, 52 people filed a complaint against Mehrabi for “publishing lies” on social media.

The Iranian judicial media outlet stated that two of the convict’s lawyers were present during the trial.

The convict’s lawyer, Babak Farsani, announced via social media that he will appeal the sentence to the Supreme Court.

Two weeks ago, another court sentenced rapper musician Tomaj Salehi to death for sedition, propaganda against the system and incitement to riot during the protests triggered by the death of the young Iranian woman of Kurdish origin Mahsa Amini.

Salehi was detained in late October 2022 and accused of supporting the protests sparked by Amini’s death on September 16, 2022.

The young woman had been detained for not wearing Islamic clothing correctly.

Amini’s death triggered strong protests in which demonstrators called for the end of the Islamic Republic for months and were repressed by security forces.

Around 500 people were killed, at least 22,000 protesters were detained and eight were executed, one of them in public.

Many women stopped wearing the veil after the protests, in a gesture of civil disobedience.

Currently, the authorities have brought the so-called Moral Customs Police back onto the streets to enforce the use of Islamic attire.
