EU to discuss urgent deployment of adequate air defense

“Ukraine urgently needs adequate air defense systems. This will be a Defense Council priority, together with the activation of the Ukraine Assistance Fund,” wrote EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, in a post on the social network X.

In a message published after Russia launched several missiles and ‘drones’ (unmanned aircraft) last night across Ukrainian territory, Josep Borrell said: “Yesterday [terça-feira] At night, Russia launched yet another massive attack on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, adding to the long list of its war crimes.”

This morning, the Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have shot down dozens of missiles and ‘drones’ launched by Russia overnight across the country, in an attack that targeted energy installations.

“The enemy used 76 means of air attack, including 55 missiles and 21 attack drones,” the Air Force said on social media, adding that the air defense systems intercepted 39 missiles and 20 drones.

According to the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, the Russian attack that took place last morning affected seven regions of Ukraine.

The attacks also damaged the railway station and railway tracks in the city of Kherson, on the banks of the Dnieper River in Russian-controlled territory, and injured two people in Brovary, near Kyiv.

In recent months, Russia’s military operations have consistently targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

In a publication disseminated via social media, Zelensky said that last night’s attacks occurred at a time when Ukraine marked the end of European fighting in the Second World War (1939-1945).

“The whole world must clearly understand who is who; the whole world has no right to give Nazism another chance,” Zelensky accused.

Ukrainian power grid operator Ukrenergo reported that installations were hit in the regions of Vinnytsia, Zaporijia, Kirovohrad, Poltava and Ivano-Frankivsk.

According to the governor of Lviv, Maksym Kozytskyi, two energy installations were hit in that region, located in the far west of the country (close to the border with Poland) and far from the frontline fighting.
