Miguel Cadilhe, Valente de Oliveira and Teresa Caeiro join the group of personalities demanding immediate reform of Justice in Portugal.

The “civic upheaval” is advancing. The manifesto in favor of a justice reform “in defense of the democratic state” doubles its subscribers.

Rio Rio, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, Augusto Santos Silva, Vítor Constâncio, Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos or Miguel Sousa Tavares. They are some of the 50 initial promoters.

The subscribers consider that there should be external scrutiny of the judiciary, involving the Assembly of the Republic.

They demand that the Public Prosecutor’s Office no longer have uncontrolled power, with each hierarchical level of the Public Prosecutor’s Office becoming responsible.

There has been a “perverse” action by Justice, several “failures” in the sector; point to slowness, breaches of judicial secrecy and serious abuses in criminal investigation. In this chapter, the 50 subscribers ask for a halt to wiretapping and searches.

This group will ask for a urgent hearing to the President of the Republic to discuss the matter. It is the extension of “civic shock” that Rui Rio asked for.

According to RTP, the manifesto will now have the signature, not of 50, but of 100 personalities.

Among the 50 new names confirmed are, according to the public station: Miguel Cadilhe, Valente de Oliveira, Teresa Caeiro, Richard Zimler, Manuela de Melo and Pedro Marques Lopes.

Miguel Cadilhe is an economist linked to the PSD, Valente de Oliveira was a minister of the PSD and is an academic, Teresa Caeiro was a deputy of the CDS-PP, Richard Zimler is a writer, Manuela de Melo, a journalist and former deputy of the PS, and Pedro Marques Lopes is jurist and commentator.

“Now, is this civic upheaval really going to change anything? I don’t know”, admitted Rui Rio this week.
