The news left Nigeria in shock, the country where the Babangida brothers, former football stars of this African country, are from.

Tijani and Ibrahim, aged 50 and 47, suffered a serious road accident this Wednesday, which ended with the death of their younger brother.

Tijani is currently in a condition considered very critical, but conscious, according to the newspaper ‘A Marca’. Haruna, the third of the three brothers and also a former football player, who played for Barcelona’s youth teams and was considered one of the biggest promises in world football, was not in the car. Tijani’s wife and an employee were also traveling in the car and were taken to the hospital, but apparently their lives were not in danger.

The news was confirmed by Emmanuel Babayaro, Tijani’s former teammate and now secretary-general of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN).

“Comrades! Let us pray for our president, Tijani Babangida, who has just suffered a terrible car accident on Kaduna-Zaria Road.”

Tijani, who was president of the Association, was capped 36 times by Nigeria (5 goals). The greatest success achieved by the ‘Super Eagles’ was winning the Olympic gold medal in Atlanta ’96.

He scored 87 goals in 310 games throughout his career. He played for clubs such as Ajax, Roda, Vitesse or Al-Ittihad. For the Nigerian national team, he also participated in the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 and 2002 CAN.

As for Ibrahim, the only fatal victim so far, he had a much less brilliant career. In a total of 38 games, he scored 6 goals.

After having represented two Nigerian clubs, he moved to the Netherlands to represent Volendam from 1998 to 2002.
