Housing. Government makes properties available and wants controlled prices

O Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, presented, this Friday, the measures that constitute the Government’s new strategy for housing.

Pinto Luz began his intervention by mentioning that the sector’s problems have “torn society apart” in recent years and that the data shows why young people have been leaving the country. The housing crisis, in addition to increasing “social differences”, also created difficulty for young people to emancipate themselves.

The Government considered that one of the first measures should involve encouraging supply. Therefore, the Executive will make public properties available for housing at an affordable cost.

See the new measures announced by the Minister of Housing:

• Municipalities will be able to use properties that are not used by the State

Municipalities will now be able to use properties that the central State is not able to use, the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing announced today, promising details on this measure “in the next ten days”.

• Local authorities decide again on new local accommodation licenses

Local authorities will once again be able to decide, with “autonomy”, on new local accommodation licenses, the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing said today, also confirming the repeal of the extraordinary tax on this sector of activity.

• Government wants rustic land to be used for housing

The Government wants to change the law so that rustic land can be used for certain housing purposes, the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing said today.

• Income support will be changed to fix restrictions

The Government wants to safeguard the situation of people who lost income support following a change in the value of the contract or sale of the property, the Minister of Housing said today, specifying that these restrictions will be eliminated.

• Housing measures for young people will have a dedicated Council of Ministers

Housing measures for young people will be approved in an extraordinary Council of Ministers dedicated to the issue, the Minister of Housing said today, stressing that this area cannot be the “poor relative” of the welfare state.

• Estamo’s guardianship shared with Finance
