Today in streaming: One of the biggest Best Picture winners at the Oscars was unfairly forgotten – Cinema News

An incredible odyssey.

Winning the Oscar for Best Film does not necessarily guarantee being remembered as one of the best in history. In fact, it is quite common to see category winners relatively forgotten. This is the case of what, ironically, is one of the best films to win the award.

In 2020, Nomadland brought us a fabulous odyssey with Chloé Zhao offering a glimpse of an interesting reality into which Frances McDormand fits completely naturally.

Fern is a sixty-year-old woman who has lost everything and decides to embark on a journey through the American West. Living in a caravan like a modern nomad, she meets people who will change her journey and the way she sees herself forever, as well as helping her deal with the loss of her late husband.

Based on a book of the same name about nomadic people surviving in rural America, Zhao approached the film with the same free, improvisational spirit as his previous films.

Nomadland: A reality in motion

The film not only offers an interesting look at an unconventional type of life, but also explores a complex character, tormented by her difficulties and her past.

In the process, it delivers a very Western-inspired odyssey. The landscapes of the United States are portrayed with incredible fascination and majesty, serving as a counterpoint to a very small and intimate story that is excellently well told.

Nomadland is available on Star+.
