The popular HBO Max series “Euphoria” undergoes some changes with the new season.

“Euphoria” is a teen series that features darker themes, such as drug use or sexual harassment, written and created by Sam Levinson, based on an Israeli series of the same name broadcast between 2012 and 2013.

The plot follows the story of Rue, a young addict who is trying to get sober and discover her place in the world. Although the focus is on Rue, we also know the stories of other characters around her.

The cast features names like Zendaya (“Dune Part 2”), Maude Apatow (“The King of Staten Island”), Angus Cloud (“Abigail”), Eric Dane (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Alexa Demie (“Mainstream ”), Jacob Elordi (“Priscilla”), Barbie Ferreira (“Nope”), Nika King (“Greenleaf”), Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”), Hunter Schafer (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of the Birds and of Serpents”), Algee Smith (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) and Sydney Sweeney (“Everyone But You”).

The first season was broadcast in 2019, where it became one of the most popular HBO Max series at the time, as it was so different from other series from the studio. The second season arrived in 2022, and was renewed for a new season at the time, but a lot has changed between then and now. First we had confirmation of Barbie Ferreira’s departure from the series, then there was the death of Angus Cloud, the actor played an essential role during the second season of “Euphoria”. And, of course, strikes by screenwriters and actors affected the project.

Therefore, it is very likely that whatever plan Levinson had for the third season will no longer happen due to Cloud’s death.

Some of the “Euphoria” actors, such as Sydney Sweeney or Nika King, recently mentioned returning to the series, however those plans have changed. Filming for the new season was supposed to start soon, but HBO Max revealed that they will postpone production. According to the studio: “HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to delivering an exceptional third season. In the meantime, we will allow our squad to pursue new opportunities.”

This means that the “Euphoria” actors still have their contract with HBO Max, but will be able to do other projects until they are called back to the series. And the studio still wants the new season to hit screens in 2025.

During this middle ground, the “Euphoria” creator made another series for HBO Max, “The Idol.” The series had a very similar style, except it took place within the music industry. This series ended up being canceled after one season, having featured Lily-Rose Depp, The Weeknd, Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Jennie Kim from Blackpink. Da’Vine Randolph and Hank Azaria.
