“UAn attack planned in Berdiansk, in the Zaporijia region, by the Ukrainian special services with the help of a Russian citizen who had been recruited by Kiev (…) was foiled,” the FSB said in a statement.

The largest nuclear power plant in Europe is located in Zaporizhia, a complex under the control of Moscow forces.

According to the same document, the Russian citizen, born in 1974, was allegedly implicated in the murder of a Russian Army officer in an explosion in October 2023.

The FSB also accuses the man of having provided data on the positions of Russian forces “to the enemy”, Ukraine.

“He opened fire during an attempted arrest and was killed by retaliatory fire”, says the FSB, adding that a pistol and ammunition were seized at the scene.

A homemade explosive device was later discovered during a search of the house where he was located, the statement added.

No further details were provided about the alleged act of sabotage and the facts were not proven by independent entities or journalists.

Along with Kherson, Donetsk and Lugansk, the Zaporizhia region is one of four Ukrainian territories in which Russia maintains a military presence, although the Army does not have full control over the territories.
