Miklós Halmai was heard for around 20 minutes

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Mauro Vieira, summoned the Hungarian ambassador, Miklós Halmai, to clarify Jair Bolsonaro’s overnight stay at the Hungarian embassy, located in Brasília.

According to CNN Brasil, the ambassador said that he hosted Bolsonaro, during Carnival, to discuss common interests between Hungary and Brazil. Sources from the Brazilian ministry say that Miklós Halmai limited himself to repeating the version of events previously presented by Bolsonaro’s lawyers, who, through a note, stated that the former president had been to the Hungarian embassy to strengthen relations and “maintain contacts with the authorities of a friendly country”.

The explanations went down badly with the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which reiterated that talks and relations between the two countries must be carried out with members of the current government.

Halmai spent 20 minutes at the Itamaraty Palace, headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. So far this is the only reaction from the Brazilian government.

The decision follows the news, reported by the North American newspaper New York Times, which reported that Jair Bolsonaro spent two days at the Hungarian embassy, in what may appear to be an asylum request from the former Brazilian president with the purpose of escape from Brazilian justice.

Video surveillance images show that the former president of Brazil arrived at the embassy during the night of February 12th and left the complex on the afternoon of February 14th.

According to the NYT, Bolsonaro tried to leverage his friendship with Viktor Orbán, Hungarian Prime Minister, in an attempt to escape Brazilian justice through a possible request for asylum in Hungary.
