A pharmaceutical company Viking Therapeutics revealed on Tuesday that the daily tablet version of its weight loss medicine led to weight loss in volunteers in just 28 days.
Provisionally named VK2735, the drug was developed for the treatment of metabolic disorders, such as obesity. The results presented are from phase 1 of the clinical study, carried out with 45 volunteers.

Participants who took the highest dose of the tablet (40 milligrams) achieved a 3.3% weight reduction in 28 days, compared to those who received a placebo. Half a dose of the medication allowed an average weight loss of 1.1%.
Further evaluation of participant data demonstrated that up to 57% of people treated with VK2735 lost 5% or more of their weight after the four weeks of the study. No volunteer in the placebo group managed to achieve the same results.

The medicine acts against GLP-1 receptors, a physiological hormone that regulates appetite and glucose. Ultimately, the patient eats less and the body is encouraged to burn its energy reserves.
The CEO of the North American company, Brian Lian, believes that it may represent a more valid option for individuals with obesity who do not adapt to treatment with injectable medications. Remember that, at the end of February, the company reported that the injectable version of VK2735 allowed an average weight loss of 13.1% in just 13 weeks of treatment. “These phase 1 results highlight the promising early weight loss and tolerability profile of VK2735 when administered as an oral tablet,” Lian states in a press release.
Now, plans are to move forward with phase 2 of the study, which should take place in the second half of the year.
