A The meeting took place in Beijing, at a delicate moment in relations between the two countries, due to restrictions imposed by the Netherlands on exports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China.

Wang Wentao expressed hope that the Netherlands will continue to “support companies in fulfilling contractual obligations” and “the stability of the global semiconductor supply chain” will be ensured, according to official Beijing media.

The Chinese minister assured that the Asian country “values the Netherlands’ position in favor of free trade” and considers the European country a “reliable trading partner”.

Geoffrey van Leeuwen reiterated the Netherlands’ defense of free trade, highlighting the “great importance” attached to economic and commercial cooperation with China.

The Dutch official explained that export controls “are not directed at any particular country” and decisions are taken “with an independent assessment, minimizing the impact on the global semiconductor supply chain under the premises of security and control”.

On Wednesday, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte met in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who said he hoped the Netherlands would provide “a fair and transparent business environment” for Chinese companies.

Economic globalization may “encounter obstacles”, but he stressed that “ties cannot be broken”, Xi said.

According to the official Chinese statement, Rutte stated that his country “does not intend to disengage or break ties with China”.

Last year, the Netherlands introduced a licensing requirement for chip manufacturing equipment, after the US did the same, citing security concerns.

Beijing has repeatedly accused the US of trying to halt China’s economic development by restricting the country’s access to advanced technology. In response, Xi launched a campaign to develop ‘chips’ and other high-tech products in the country.

In January, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Beijing “is always opposed to the United States expanding the concept of national security and finding various excuses to coerce other countries into imposing a technological blockade against China.”
