Russia expels Moldovan ambassador in Moscow in retaliation for Chisinau

sAccording to Moldovan authorities, Moscow’s actions constituted a “new and flagrant violation of the norms of international law”.

“Lilian Darii received a note from the Ministry [dos Negócios Estrangeiros russo] to inform that, in response to the expulsion of an employee from the Russian embassy in Chisinau, the Russian side declares the diplomat from the Moldovan embassy ‘persona non grata'”, said the Kremlin’s official note.

Russia also protested to the Moldovan ambassador about the Moldovan authorities banning entry of a Russian delegation to participate in the 34th session of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Regional Conference for Europe, which Chisinau will host from May 14th to 17th.

According to Moscow, Chisinau is “deliberately abusing the status of host country” of the event and “politicizing the activities” of the FAO.

During this month’s Russian presidential elections, six polling stations were opened in Transnistria.

Nearly a quarter of a million people with Russian passports live in the separatist territory, almost half the population of the self-proclaimed republic, according to Transnistrian authorities.

According to official data, more than 97% of Transnistrians supported the re-election of Russian President Vladimir Putin for his fifth presidential term until 2030.

Putin, who has been in power since 2000, also served as prime minister between 2008 and 2012.
