Pat least 27 people died and 15 were injured following a bus accident in the Cajamarca region, Peru, on Sunday night.
The vehicle, which came from Celendín, was heading towards the city of Sorochuco, when it overturned and fell down a 200-meter ravine, according to the provincial prosecutor of Cajamarca on local radio station RPP, cited by the Reuters agency.
“The information is still being collected, because the accident occurred at night on a dirt road, where the bus fell into the river”, he added.
However, the Public Prosecutor’s Office requested the arrest of the driver of the vehicle, identified as Máximo Ortiz Marchena, for being “the presumed perpetrator of the crimes of homicide and harm to physical integrity”.
The city of Celendín declared three days of mourning due to the incident.
For his part, the Minister of Transport and Communications said that all the victims’ expenses will be covered by the bus insurance, having assured that he will “cooperate” to clarify “the issue”.
