More than 800,000 people in Europe and the US appear to have been tricked into sharing bank card details and other personal data with a huge network of fake online stores, apparently operated from China.

For example, according to data analyzed by information technology experts and journalists, Europeans and North Americans shared email addresses, with 476 thousand of these 800 thousand consumers shared debit and credit card data, including the three-digit security number. They also shared full names, phone numbers and postal addresses.

IT experts claim that this network is highly organized, technically experienced and continuous. The chain’s first fake stores, operated from China, were created in 2015.


Over the past three years, more than a million “orders” have been processed. Not everyone was paid, but the group may have tried to steal up to 50 million euros.

It is true that many of these fake stores have disappeared, but more than 22,500 are still in operation.

The value of personal data

The existence of this network of fake stores was revealed by Security Research Labs (SR Labs), a German cybersecurity consultancy that obtained several gigabytes of data and shared it with the newspaper Die Zeit.
