Rain of fish hits Iran: how can this atmospheric phenomenon be explained?

Last weekend there was a ridiculous phenomenon that surprised the inhabitants of the city of Yasuj, in Iran. Hundreds of fish began to fall from the sky and hit several cars, making traffic difficult on a road in that town.

Videos shared on social media showed that locals didn’t want to believe what they were seeing, needing to pick up the fish to make sure it was something real.

Although it looks like a scene from a science fiction movie, this type of “rain” has occurred on several occasions and has a logical explanation. It is due to a very strong meteorological phenomenon.

According to ‘National Geographic’, the An event known as “animal rain” occurs when waterspouts suck fish or other animals from rivers or lakes, drag them into the clouds and fall as precipitation.

Scientists claim that fish rain occurs due to tornadoes. When a tornado crosses the sea or ocean, it grabs fish, frogs, turtles or crabs with the force of the wind.

The animals move along with the tornado and remain in the sky until the wind speed decreases. When there is a gradual slowdown, the creatures fall to the ground along with the rainwater. In this case, creating a “rain of fish”.
