Tesla showed a preview of a future “ride-hailing” feature in its app, before the robotaxi’s presentation in August. The company launched mock-ups of future functionality, which show the ability to “call” a trip from your app.

Images show functionality similar to Uber

The company didn't offer many details about how it would work, but the images show similar functionality to Uber, with the ability to remotely set the car temperature before your arrival. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced earlier this month that the company would unveil its long-promised robotaxis in August.

Tesla has been promising an autonomous ride-hailing service for years, with Musk promising that the company's robotaxi would begin transporting passengers in 2019. For now, it is unclear when this service might launch.

We are currently working on ride-hailing functionality that will be available in the future. We believe Tesla's software experience is the best across all of our products and plan to seamlessly incorporate ride-hailing into the app.

The company wrote in its latest earnings report.

Tesla had its steepest loss in more than 10 years

The update was shared in Tesla's Q1 2024 earnings report. The manufacturer reported a decline in revenue of 9% compared to last year, its steepest loss in more than a decade.

During a call with investors, Musk suggested that the ride-hailing service, which he called “Cyber Cab,” would work like “some combination of Airbnb and Uber,” so that Tesla owners could choose to make their vehicles part of of the service.

There will be a certain number of cars that Tesla itself owns and operates on the route. There will be a set of cars that are owned by the end user, but which they can add or subtract from the route whenever they want.

And you can decide whether you want the car to be used only by friends and family, or only by five-star users, or by anyone.

Musk said.
