Scott Adkins was one of the many spectators over the weekend of the new adrenaline-filled version of “Road House”, directed by Doug Liman and which stars Jake Gyllenhaal and also the Portuguese Daniela Melchior and Joaquim de Almeida.
Despite praise for the Amazon Prime Video film based on the popular 1989 cult title starring Patrick Swayze, which was called “Profissão: Duro” in Portugal, the use of special effects in fight scenes was regretted by what is one of the greatest and most popular movie stars of pure and hard martial arts action.
The CV of the British martial arts athlete is respectable: in addition to the popular sagas “Undisputed” and “Ninja”, dozens of films of the “B series” genre stand out, alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme, Donnie Yen, Wu Jing, Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais, and occasionally in the ‘first division’ of Hollywood, with emphasis on the acclaimed portrayal of the villain Killa Harkan in “John Wick: Chapter 4”.
His knowledge extends through The Art of Action, an important ‘podcast’ on YouTube where he deconstructs how scenes from classic films of the genre were made with their respective protagonists.
With praise for the director, the protagonist and also Conor McGregor, in the film debut of UFC professional athlete Scott Adkins https://twitter.com/TheScottAdkins/status/1771802712327311794: “I really liked ‘Road House’. Doug Liman – great job subverting the genre. Gyllenhaal in great shape, respect! What a debut from Conor McGregor [@TheNotoriousMMA]. Happy when a film like this does well, because it’s my thing, but damn, what’s with the fight scenes with special effects?! Swayze didn’t need that.”
To exemplify how special effects can be used in a more discreet and creative way (and with much less budget), the martial arts star shared https://twitter.com/TheScottAdkins/status/1771827940172439942 the video of an interview he did with actor and choreographer Johnny Trí Nguyễn about his acclaimed Vietnamese film “The Rebel” (“Dòng Máu Anh Hùng”, 2006).
