Every Hollywood artist longs for the moment when their name is called on the Oscars stage, but no one waits for a Razzie
The Razzie award is only given in the United States and goes against the great statuette coveted by everyone: The Oscar. In this case, the parody was originated by a Hollywood publicist, John Wilson. The objective is to reward the worst actors, the worst films and all other categories common at the Oscars. Although the concept is humorous, there are those who don’t find it very funny…
JAMIE DORAN AND DAKOTA JOHNSON (2016)
The Bermuda Triangle is what we can call what happened that year. Jamie Doran and Dakota Johnson won the Worst Actor and Worst Actress Awards in the film that won the Worst Movie Award of the year, “50 Shades of Grey,” all on the same night. Although the film was one of the biggest box office hits around the world and had revenues 14 times greater than the cost of making it, it was not enough to prevent the actor from winning the Worst Actor Award and the actress the Worst Actress Award.
TOM CRUISE (2017)
The 2017 Top Gun star was awarded the Worst Actor Award for his character Nick Morton in the film “The Mummy”. Once again, the box office success did not convince the Razzie judges and the actor ended up being awarded that year’s award…
SANDRA BULLOCK (2009)
“Miss Detective” did not let this blank moment slip away and took the opportunity to have fun as it was a humorous award. When she went on stage to receive the Award for Worst Actress in the film “Maluca Paixão”, the actress carried several DVDs on a cart and said: “See with your own eyes and tell me if I don’t deserve this award!”. The funniest thing happened later. The following day, the actress won her first Oscar for Best Actress in the film “The Blind Side”.
CAMERON DIAZ (2014)
The actress managed to win two Razzies in the same year for the two films she had made. Those responsible were “S*x Tape: Perdido na Nuvem” and “Mulheres ao Attack”. It was certainly a memorable night.
ADAM SANDLER (2011)
The actor known for his varied characters in comedy films didn’t escape taking home a Razzie. In 2011, he was considered by the judges as the Worst Actor and Worst Actress in the same film “Jack and Jill”, considered by many to be one of the worst films in Hollywood.
ASHTON KUTCHER (2010)
Ashon Kutcher is an example we should not follow. The actor won two Razzies in the same year for his performances in “Par Perfeito” and “Idas e Vindas do Amor”. As if that wasn’t enough, the following year he did it again with “Two and a Half Men”.
THE JONAS BROTHERS (2009)
And since you can’t be good at everything, the band that stole the hearts of hundreds of teenagers ended up taking home a Razzie for their performances in the world of the big screen with the film “Jonas Brothers 3D: Show”. Although movie tickets didn’t stop selling, Nick, Kevin and Joe didn’t convince the judges. Maybe next time they’ll just focus on the world of music…
PARIS HILTON (2008)
Once again, we can’t have a talent for everything… fashion and cinema are certainly intertwined, but talent is needed if we want to reconcile. Paris Hilton had a brief stint on the big screen when she played Cristabelle in the film “The Hottie and the Nottie“, her performance earned her the name of actress but also a Razzie for Worst Actress. Certainly if there were Razzies in Moda I would offer one to the judges, until then we wait.
MIKE MYERS (2008)
“The Love Guru” was a film that divided opinions. Although the cast has stars like Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake and Ben Kingsley, the acting lessons didn’t extend to Myers playing Guru Maurice. At the end of the day he brought the Worst Actor Razzie to accompany him home. Maybe next time I’ll consult a Theater Guru.
LINDSAY LOHAN (2007)
The actress who went from successful as a teenager to convicted in 2010, was awarded a Razzie for her performance in “I Know Who Killed Me”. The film was a failure in Hollywood, but the news that would make her appear first on every magazine cover 3 years later made up for the lack of protagonism in the film.
EDDIE MURPHY (2007)
We always hear that you shouldn’t do everything at the same time, but Murphy is not an advocate of this reasoning. The actor played 3 characters in “Norbit: A Heavy Comedy” and yet he was unable to perform any of them in a positive enough way to escape a Razzie. The film was nominated in 13 different categories and won 3 of them.
ROB SCHNEIDER (2005)
Comedy has its limits and Schneider exceeded some of them, making his performance in “Gigolo Pofissional” an embarrassing moment for Hollywood. In addition to the actor taking the Razzie to the shelves at home, the film was nominated for Worst Film. The “Gigolô” experience was not the best and he left for Hollywood films, this time with clothes on.
JENNIFER LOPEZ AND BEN AFFLECK (2003)
No one escapes Razzie’s eyes, and Jennifer Lopez is no exception, but love solves everything. At the height of the rumors, JLO and Ben Affleck were invited to work together on “Contact Risk” and they couldn’t resist saying yes so they could spend as much time together as possible. Unfortunately, they also ended up going to the Razzie nominations together and together they won the Worst Actress and Worst Actor Awards.
BRITNEY SPEARS (2002)
In Spears’ case, music and theater do not go hand in hand. The film “Destinos” was nominated for 8 categories and won for Worst Actress and Worst Music, both directed at Spears. Perhaps it wasn’t the best choice for actress and producer of the film’s music, two mice in one cheesecake.
BILL COSBY (1987)
The trip to the “Late Late Show” could have been postponed until perhaps even later, it was on the program that the actor received the Razzies for Worst Actor, Worst Film and Worst Screenplay. This feat was due to his performance in the film “Leonard, the great spy”.
ROBERTO BENIGINI (2002)
Hollywood is a world of stars, and sometimes we see some falling ones. After the success that is still valued today in “La vida es Bella“, the actor decided to participate in the film “Pinocchio”, which made him a shooting star in Hollywood. Benigini was awarded the Razzie for Worst Actor.
JOHN TRAVOLTA (2000)
The success of the actor and dancer also brought some heartbreak. However, nothing that a trip into the actor’s past won’t make us forget the Razzie he won in the film “The Reconquista”. To overcome this, we hide the great failure of the film on the big screen and present other films that marked generations such as “Grease“, “Pulp Fiction“, “Hairspray“, and a few more to boost morale.
BRUCE WILLIS (1999)
The famous John Clane in “Die Hard” also has a Razzie at home, perhaps hidden behind all the other awards he has won. He won the Worst Actor Award three times in the same year in “Armageddon“, “State of Siege” and “Code to Hell”. The actor’s “Sixth Sense” was only discovered a year later.
BROOKE SHIELDS (1980)
The actress was Razzie’s first victim, at age 14 in the film “The Blue Lagoon”. A film that is still considered a classic by many today, but that doesn’t invalidate her lack of mercy when she won the Worst Actress Award at 14 years old.
