Megadeth’s great (and sad) song that talks about Alzheimer’s Disease

-

Released in June 2013, “Super Collider” is the fourteenth studio album by Thrash Metal band Megadeth. Although it is not (by far) the best work of the group led by guitarist/vocalist Dave Mustaine, “Super Collider” features some interesting songs, such as “Forget To Remember”.

The ninth track on “Super Collider”, “Forget To Remember” was written by Dave Mustaine and has a rhythmic tempo (by Megadeth standards, of course). According to a note published by the Songfacts website, the song talks about a very sad topic: Alzheimer’s Disease, which destroys memory and other important mental functions.

Mustaine wrote “Forget To Remember” inspired by his late mother-in-law, who suffered from Alzheimer’s. The Megadeth leader spoke about the aforementioned disease during his appearance on the Shockwave podcast.

“The sad thing about Alzheimer’s disease is that it’s like watching an ice sculpture of someone you love melt before your eyes; it’s very, very painful,” said Mustaine, who went into more detail about the meaning of “Forget To Remember”.

“So the song has a double meaning where there’s a guy and he talks to a girl in the song and it’s like in the movie ‘The Notebook’ (…). So, you don’t really know in this song if it’s a girl who is intentionally trying to forget about a relationship with a guy or if it’s someone who has Alzheimer’s disease, which is actually what it’s all about.”

“Forget To Remember” features David Draiman, lead singer of the band Disturbed. Mustaine gave some details about the collaboration in an interview with the Ultimate Guitar website.

“He came over, we talked and he had some really cool ideas. He had the actual melodies for the chorus of ‘Dance In The Rain’. He had a part to do and in “Forget to Remember” there’s a little improvised part right before each chorus. I wouldn’t have done something like that, but he did and it was like, ‘Wow, that’s really cool.'”

“Super Collider” is the last Megadeth album recorded by guitarist Chris Broderick and drummer Shawn Drover, who were replaced by Kiko Loureiro and Chris Adler (who, by the way, are no longer part of the band either). Read more about the album in the review below.
